The project “IoT4SRGK - Improvement of heavy rain hazard maps through real-time data” aims to investigate the extent to which heavy rain hazard maps can be improved in terms of their informative value through the use of small-scale real data. For this purpose, an IoT-based sensor system is to be set up in the city of Gütersloh, which measures real-time data in the urban space that is required as input data or modeling parameters for the heavy rain hazard maps. These are, for example, measurements of precipitation, temperature, evaporation and/or soil moisture. The aim is to find out which sensors are needed at which locations to assess heavy rain hazards. The findings from the measurements will reveal small-scale interactions on site for the first time, which were previously only taken into account by general assumptions in the modeling and may distort reality. As a result, an optimized heavy rain hazard map is to be achieved using IoT data. This will make a significant contribution to improving the existing process for creating heavy rain hazard maps. At the same time, an equipment concept for sensor technology for the assessment of heavy rain hazards will be developed in order to develop a standardized procedure for the deployment of sensor technology in urban areas for municipalities, which does not yet exist. The aim is to avoid too many isolated solutions, particularly in the context of smart city strategies.
The project is funded by the European Union and the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
